A novel use of toothpick in MRI suite
Abstract
Anaesthesia services in the MRI suite are increasing and require that the anaesthetic equipment is adequate to ensure patient safety, is MRI compatible, and has a negligible effect on image quality1. An adult male intubated with portex ETT was scheduled for MR angiography. The ETT was MRI incompatible as it had a metal spring in its one way valve. The inflation tube above the pilot balloon was cut and its lumen was occluded with a snuggly fitting toothpick after inflating the cuff. It is recommended that within the 50 Gauss line only non-ferromagnetic equipment should be used. We thought it was best to use the tube as described above since there was no other option available.
